Husky Group Hops Onboard With Metro

1 August 2008

Husky Deutschland GmbH has announced a deal with wholesale giant Metro – which trades as Makro in the UK - to stock a range of its most popular chillers in the company’s 60 stores across the Rhineland.

Husky, which has UK headquarters in Bilton Way/Lutterworth, beat off competition from firms worldwide to secure the contract to supply all of Metro’s refrigeration stock. The group’s commitment to environmental issues was held up as one of the main reasons why Husky won the contract.

The company was the first in Germany to use CFC-free gases in its chillers and has been commended by Greenpeace for a number of other eco-friendly alterations to its products. It is a further feather in the cap for the rapidly expanding firm, which now has bases in Europe, the US, India, China, South Africa and Australia.

The link-up will be confirmed at a huge Metro trade fair to be held in Dusseldorf, Germany, in September. More than 50,000 Metro customers from across the world will be flown in for the event, which will showcase Husky’s renowned refrigeration, as well as Metro’s other leading suppliers.

Further discussions are due to take place later this year which could see the Husky Group become official supplier for Metro across Europe, including the UK where the group trades as Makro.

Husky UK Chief Executive Geoff Thomasson said the deal was further evidence of the company’s growing influence and expansion around the world. He said: “Innovation, value for money, our consideration of environmental issues and the manufactured quality of our products were just a few of the reasons why Metro chose us as its supplier in Germany. “The opportunity to put our products on sale across a cash and carry business which has thousands of visitors to its stores each day is a unique and very exciting one.”
